Description
Under general direction of the Director, Office of Special Education, designs, produces, and delivers Special Education curricula, training, program improvement, and related education services to education agencies to ensure the achievement of mandated goals and to meet existing, and emerging needs; performs mandated regulatory functions; performs work of a difficult nature and generally works independently in the monitoring and evaluation of education programs in school districts statewide; and performs other related work as required.
The Autism Specialist role encompasses the creation of resources, guidance, technical assistance, and the facilitation of training sessions tailored for diverse stakeholders, including Local Education Agencies (LEAs) and families. Through these initiatives, they are to foster a deep understanding of the unique learning needs of students on the autism spectrum and promote the implementation of inclusive practices within educational settings. By collaborating closely with county offices and regional units, the Specialist contributes to the development of program guidelines, shaping key areas such as curricula, instructional materials, and the least restrictive environment (LRE). In addition, the role involves an ongoing commitment to remaining well-informed about current trends in autism, inclusion, LRE, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), and relevant curricular areas. This knowledge is acquired through attending conferences, professional development, self-study, and consultation with field experts, ensuring that the Specialist stays at the forefront of advancements in the discipline.
Requirements
Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in Special Education or a field related to Special Education.
Note: Applicants who possess a Master's degree which is not in Special Education or a related field may substitute a New Jersey educational certificate issued by the State Board of Examiners and/or other professional endorsement in Special Education, as Teacher of the Handicapped, Learning Disabilities Consultant, School Psychologist, School Social Worker, or certification in a related field.
Experience
Four (4) years of experience in a school district or other educational institution in programs providing Special Education.
Preferred Education/Experience
BCBA/BCBA-D certified; Five (5) years of experience in special education and related services, with a specific focus on autism, proficiency in school-based application of applied behavior analysis and evidence-based instructional practices for students with autism; A deep understanding and comprehensive content knowledge of learning theory, and PBIS; Experience in data analysis processes relevant to autism; Experience interfacing with community groups, school district staff, and other professionals; Experience in designing, implementing, and managing both pre-service and in-service staff training programs in any of the aforementioned topics, aligned with evidence-based practices for students on the autism spectrum; Experience acquired in school-based settings for students from preschool through age 21.Open to the Following
